if i were a dragonfly i'd hover over to the nearest pond and sit idly by and watch the humans blink their tiny eyes at me little miss take a diamond from the river and multiply times ten we'd be rich wouldn't that be grand? picture it all the money that we could have made had we set aside for a rainy day and when it came we decided to stay inside

about

“My Plants Are Hanging on by a Thread” is a cozy, hazy art-pop exploration of the interplay between everyday human life and the natural world.

The genesis of this EP was an impromptu soliloquy spoken into a field recorder on a rainy summer day in the mountains of New Mexico. “We’re all sort of trapped, in something that we’ve created for ourselves” laments the voice on the title track, reflecting on the dysphoria of an everyday life increasingly at odds with the natural world. Something in us yearns for the release of nature, yet modernity urges us to resist it. We resolve the tension with compromises like houseplants: commodified, compartmentalized bits of biology kept confined in the built environment, where we can exert complete control over them.

Blending field recordings with lush instrumentation, warm rhythms, and lyrics imbued with the whimsy of magical realism, the five songs on MPAHOBAT dip in and out of the experiences of different people, animals, and automatons to explore this fraught relationship between human lifestyles and nature. The EP’s art features the machine-generated outputs of a neural network we trained on thousands of illustrations of plants and insects – uncanny specimens that have the simulated quality of natural life, but have no home in the natural world. As a whole, we hope this EP speaks to the struggle we each face in finding our own slice of coziness and community amid the perpetual motion of technological progress.
